Indian man shows empty Germany office at 4:58 PM on Monday: ‘Work is just a part of life’

For many Indian employees, seeing an office almost empty before 5 pm on a Monday might seem unusual. For Mohit, an Indian man living in Germany, it’s simply part of the work culture.Mohit recently shared a short video on Instagram showing his workplace at 4:58 pm on a Monday. And there wasn’t much happening around him. As he turned the camera towards the office floor, rows of desks and chairs could be seen sitting empty. Before showing the office, Mohit pointed to his phone, which showed 16:58.“Want to see the work culture difference between India and Germany? Here, take a look,” he said in the video. The clip quickly caught attention online, particularly among Indians familiar with long working hours and the expectation of staying back at the office even after the workday is technically over.In Mohit’s workplace, however, employees appeared to have simply left once their working hours were done. No crowded desks, no rush of people finishing late tasks and no one seemingly hanging around just because it was Monday. The video was brief, but the message was clear. For him, the difference isn’t only about when people leave work. It’s also about how they view work in relation to the rest of their lives. The idea of maintaining a clear boundary between professional and personal time has often been associated with German workplace culture. While experiences can obviously differ from one company to another, Mohit’s video offered a small glimpse into what that balance looks like at his workplace. And perhaps that’s what made the clip relatable for so many viewers. The office being empty at 4:58 pm isn’t necessarily the remarkable part. It’s the idea that leaving on time doesn’t have to come with guilt. After all, work takes up a part of life. It doesn’t have to take up all of it.
