Bhavitha Mandava is having quite a year.The Indian model first caught the fashion world’s attention when she opened Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2026 collection in New York. Not long after, she made history as the first Indian House Ambassador for the French fashion house.Now, she’s added another major moment to that growing list.Bhavitha made her red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival, and Chanel clearly wasn’t going to dress her in anything forgettable.The model attended the premiere of Shin’ya Tsukamoto’s Mr Nelson, Did You Kill People?, wearing the closing look from Chanel’s Resort 2027 collection. The mermaid dress that took 1,250 hours to make
Designed by Matthieu Blazy, the aqua-blue gown is the sort of dress that doesn’t really need an introduction.Its fitted, mermaid-like shape follows Bhavitha’s figure closely, while the shifting shades of blue give the impression of light moving across water. The front has a dramatic V-neckline, which is mirrored at the back, while the flounced details trail down the gown and add to that underwater feel.But the real story is in the embroidery.According to Vogue, the dress features around 30,000 domed, heart-shaped sequins in iridescent sky blue and deep turquoise. The flounces at the back and hem are covered with another 96,000 oval sequins.And all of that took time.Chanel’s Lesage atelier spent approximately 1,250 hours embroidering the gown. That’s more than 50 days if you somehow did nothing but work on the dress around the clock.The result is easy to understand once you see it. The sequins catch the light with every movement, while the layers at the back give the dress an almost shell-like quality.On Bhavitha, it really does look less like a traditional red-carpet gown and more like something that belongs underwater.
She kept everything else surprisingly simple
With a dress this elaborate, it would’ve been easy to go overboard with the styling.Bhavitha didn’t.She wore a blue-and-green sequined camellia brooch, along with gold-tone metal and red resin earrings. Silver strappy sandals completed the look.That was pretty much it.Her makeup stayed soft, too. She went for feathered brows, silver eyeshadow, a glossy pink lip and a light touch of blush and highlighter. Soft contouring brought out her sharp features without making the makeup compete with the gown.And her hair was left loose in a simple side part, with the lengths falling over one shoulder.It worked.The dress was already doing plenty of talking, so there was no reason for everything else to fight for attention.
From jeans at the Met Gala to a Chanel mermaid moment
