Long before Christopher Lloyd became a household name for playing the eccentric scientist Doc Brown in the Back to the Future franchise, the actor spent his childhood exploring the grounds of a sprawling Connecticut estate. The 400-acre property, known as Waveny, was once his family home and featured landscapes designed by the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape architect associated with New York City’s Central Park.In a real estate profile published by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, October 27, the Emmy-winning actor, now 88, looked back on his childhood at the grand estate in New Canaan, Connecticut. Recalling its opulence and the colourful personalities who visited his home, Lloyd described an upbringing that helped shape his early fascination with the arts.

Lloyd’s family wealth came from his maternal grandfather, Lewis Henry Lapham, who helped establish the Texaco Oil Company in 1902. In 1944, when Lloyd was six, he moved into Waveny with his six older siblings. The actor recalled being captivated by the grandeur of the property. “I was awed by our mansion’s Gilded Age opulence,” he said, reflecting on the experience of growing up in a home that offered a glimpse into an affluent era.His mother, a singer, also played an important role in making the estate a lively cultural setting. She hosted musical recitals there and, when Lloyd was eight, began organising parties attended by artists and other creative personalities.“They appealed to me. Being an artist seemed to allow your spirit to run free,” Lloyd recalled. The gatherings exposed him to a world of artistic expression at a young age and helped nurture his interest in a creative career.

Despite growing up in an extraordinary setting, Lloyd’s childhood was not without challenges. He was sent to boarding school in upstate New York, and his parents divorced when he was 12. His father moved out of Waveny, while his mother continued living at the estate, occasionally retreating to an apartment on Park Avenue in Manhattan during the winter months.Halfway through his junior year, Lloyd left boarding school and enrolled at a public school in Westport, Connecticut. It was there that he began to discover acting. His drama teacher cast him in the play Charley’s Aunt, giving him his first meaningful experience of performing on stage. That experience set him on a path that would eventually lead to a successful career in theatre, film and television. Lloyd worked as a stage apprentice at theatres in Mount Kisco and Rye, New York, before continuing his training in Falmouth, Massachusetts. In 1957, he auditioned for and secured admission to New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse.Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, he continued performing in theatre productions before establishing himself as a screen actor. His career would later include celebrated roles in Taxi and the Back to the Future films, making him one of Hollywood’s most recognisable character actors.

Today, Lloyd and his wife, Lisa Lloyd, live in a contemporary California coastal hacienda on an acre of land in Montecito. The actor told the publication that the couple previously lived farther up in the hills, but lost their property in the 2008 fires.Their replacement home, he explained, felt isolating, prompting them to move closer to town. While his present-day home offers a different setting, Waveny continues to occupy a special place in his memories. The estate was acquired by the city of New Canaan in 1967 and transformed into a public park and recreation area.Lloyd returned to the property a few years ago when his wife organised a birthday celebration for him there. The visit brought back memories of the many experiences he had growing up on the grounds.“It was emotional to be back, having spent many good, bad and ugly years in that setting,” he told The Wall Street Journal. “Whenever I’m there, I feel like it’s still my home.”

Waveny Park is now a popular public destination

Once the actor’s childhood home, Waveny is now a public park attracting more than 250,000 visitors annually.

The estate that once served as Lloyd’s childhood home is now a much-loved recreational space for the people of New Canaan. According to the park’s website, Waveny Park Conservancy manages approximately 450 acres of parkland and woodlands that attract more than 250,000 visitors annually. The property features 3.5 miles of trails, a pond, expansive lawns and meadows, offering visitors a chance to enjoy its natural beauty and historic surroundings. A survey also found that nearly 80% of New Canaan residents visit the park daily, weekly or monthly.
