‘Ramayana’ song ‘Mangal Rang’ sparks new row: Netizens question a scene, ‘Since when do brides watch the groom haldi ceremony?’

A new song from ‘Ramayana’ has sparked a fresh debate on social media. A scene in ‘Mangal Rang’ shows haldi being applied to Lord Rama, and viewers are divided over whether it is his haldi ceremony or a ritual before his coronation.

About the new song ‘Mangal Rang’

The makers released ‘Mangal Rang’ on Sunday. Composed by AR Rahman, the track is sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. It celebrates the love and sacred union of Lord Rama and Maa Sita.

The scene that started the debate

In the scene, women are seen applying haldi to Lord Rama while Maa Sita stands beside him. Some viewers asked why the bride was present at what they believed was the groom’s ceremony. Others said the scene was misunderstood and is linked to the coronation.

What social media users said

One X user wrote, “This is the Ramayana trailer, where Sita Ji watches Ram Ji haldi ceremony. Since when do brides watch the groom’s haldi ceremony? Isn’t this disrespectful to Hindu tradition?”Another user pointed to wedding customs in several Indian traditions. “Since when did the bride sit and watch the groom’s Haldi ceremony in traditional Hindu weddings? The groom has his Haldi at his home, and the bride has hers at her own home in many Indian traditions,” the user wrote.A third user shared similar confusion. “Wait, why is Mata Sita attending Ram’s Haldi ceremony when she’s supposed to be his bride? Did the Ramayana team overlook this detail, or am I missing something?” the post read.

Questions about the Mithila wedding

Another user referred to the circumstances of the wedding in Mithila and suggested the scene may not be about marriage at all. “Sita Ram ji got married in Mithila. Only the royal men from Ayodhya went there after receiving the Swayamvar news. So if it is a marriage scene, they may both be in Mithila. Or maybe this is not a haldi ceremony at all,” the user wrote.
